Each December the town of Georgetown transforms for two weekends into a bustling Christmas scene reminiscent of Christmas of long ago. Thousands come to this tiny mountain town to experience a traditional holiday where Christmas hasn't changed in 100 years: roasted chestnuts, holiday shopping, horse-drawn wagon rides through historic Georgetown, and wonderful sights and smells. Visitors enjoy appearances by St. Nicholas in his traditional dress and the daily procession of the Santa Lucia, as well as carolers in Victorian costume, dancers, and other family entertainment. Adorned with lights and Christmas greenery and blanketed with snow, the quaint, historic town of Georgetown, Colorado has been a Christmas tradition for generations of Colorado families.
Now think of a tiny mountain town with lots of people, roasted chestnuts (2 chestnuts for $1), over priced holiday shopping, horse-drawn wagon rides for $4 a person, lights and greenery, no snow due to warmer weather, no smells unless the guy next to you watching the procession of Santa Lucia hadn't showered in a few days and no carolers in Victorian costume.
It was nice to get away for a day, a Saturday no less, as a family! It was, well, disappointing due to the extravegant nature of the description. We did watch the Santa Lucia parade of children, heard them sing Christmas "carols" such as Frosty the Snowman, O Christmas Tree, and other non-religious "carols." Elianna enjoyed hearing the children sing the songs and she especially liked the cookies they passed out! She definitely went for looks and not taste on the cookies. Gotta get that girl in the kitchen and teach her about Christmas cookies!
The priest shoveled a cookie in his mouth so he could clap. Haha!
After the parade, we headed to Golden CO which is another quaint small cute town and ate lunch at a delicious restaurant that served wood fire cooked pizza. Chris and I are pretty picky about our pizza after living in NJ for 7 years. I will say that their pizza passed the test! Delicious!
