Punkin' Chunkin

Is it Wednesday already?  This week has flown right on by!  Saturday at the Araphahoe County Fairgrounds was the annual Punkin' Chunkin.  I had seen such a thing before on TV, specifically Little People Big World, but had never been to a real live one before.  On the one hand it's exciting to watch and on the other it so is not (at least last Saturday).  Here's why.  If the pumpkin actually shoots then it's fun.  If you wait and wait and then it goes 7 feet, very boring.  Even more unexciting is when you don't realize it's super cold out and then it starts to rain.  That's what happened to us.  I stepped outside and determined it was cool out so I didn't dress myself or Elianna very warmly not stopping to think that we would be standing outside on a flat plain waiting for people to destroy pumpkins.  On a total side note:  Isn't it amazing how we are in a "recession" but yet we go out and waste pumpkins by shooting them to see how far they will go.

There were the traditional trebuchets (yes, I totally had to look up how to spell that word) and then there were air cannons.  There were 4 chunkins throughout the day (between 10:45 am and 4 pm) but we only stayed for the first one.  I'm assuming the chunkins got better throughout the day.  Anyway, there was the kid division first and then the adult division.  The first group in the adult division did so great!  Their shot went over 1700 feet!  The rest not so good.  The air cannons did ok but you can't really see the pumpkin being shot because it is so fast.

Least you think it was a terrible festival and we didn't have any fun, it was actually interesting and if it hadn't been so cold and rainy (and face it, we were dressed better), it would have been alot of fun.  The food vendors were out and there were kid games and prizes that you could do.  Granted most of them you had to buy tickets for but there were the occasional free games.  We will definitely go again next year - dressed a bit better.
