Elianna's first sleepover did not exactly happen when or how I had planned in my head. The when & how would have been at Grammy & Papa's house when we go next week. But alas those plans all went up in flames.
Once upon a time there lived a happy little family. There was Papi, Mommy, Harley and baby Elianna. It was a nice quiet Tuesday evening and Papi was feeding Elianna her dinner bottle. The Mommy decided she was going to make Applebee's Onion Peels from her Top Secret Recipes cookbook. She had gone out in the afternoon and got all the ingredients she would need to make this scrumptious food so, she got it all ready and even took pictures of the ingredients so she could post this wonderful Super Bowl recipe on her blog. She smiled as she listened to Papi talking with Elianna about all the accomplishments she had done that day (her army/inchworm crawl). The Mommy set her pot full of oil on the burner and put a lid on it because that's what you do with water to get it to boil faster. Although she is from the South she was so unexperienced when it came to deep frying anything. Elianna began fussing so the Mommy stepped away from the stove just for a minute to check on her and Papi. When she came back in the kitchen, lo and behold, her pot was smoking. As she commented to Papi, "Oh wow! the pot is smoking" it caught on fire. She began screaming at Papi to come quickly as the 4 foot high flames almost reached the ceiling. Papi began searching desperately for the fire extinguisher because the Mommy couldn't think about where it was because all she could see was the house going up in flames. Papi finally found the fire extinguisher and sprayed the pot quite vigurously. "Quick" he yelled "take Elianna upstairs to her room and open all the windows." Oh that poor Papi and Mommy. Without stopping to realize that the smoke would soon travel up the stairs because that how smoke works, you know, the Mommy quickly ran upstairs with Elianna and Harley. The Papi was quickly driven outside by all the smoke and chemical fumes and as he leaned over the deck rail coughing and gasping for air, he shouted to Mommy to cover Elianna's face and come outside because the smoke and fumes were filling the house. Mommy covered Elianna's face with her arm and ran down the hall, down the stairs, through the living room, through the dining room, through the mud room until she reached the crisp clean air outside. Ah, what blessed air to breath. But wait, the baby had no coat, no blanket, nothing to keep her warm. The brave Papi quickly ran inside and got Elianna a blanket to wrap her up and keep her warm while they figured out just exactly what they were going to do. He then ran back inside opening windows so the smoke would leave the house that Mommy had cleaned so nicely just the day before. Get to the point here Mommy. Ok, ok. And that's when Elianna had her first sleepover. At their friends Tommy & Cheri's house. Mommy went back that evening to clean up as much as she could (Papi had to stay at T&C's to work on his sermon). The next day, Elianna spent the day at Mr. & Mrs. Koenig's house so Mommy could go home and clean the house once again.
No more deep frying for this Southern-now-living-in-the-cold-tundra Mommy. But that's a story for another day.
